CRACK DOWN ON VIDEO TAPING ACTS OF VIOLENCE

Senator Kenneth P. LaValle today announced that the Senate has introduced a measure designed to crack down on the alarming and brutal trend of recording criminal acts of violence with the intent of distributing them on the Internet for entertainment purposes.

This measure addresses an increasing number of violent attacks orchestrated and recorded by individuals who want to post the videos on Internet sharing sites such as YouTube.com and MySpace.com.

The bill creates the new crime of unlawful violent recording when a person commits an assault while knowingly capturing the crime with a recording device. In addition, any person who persuades others to engage in this activity would be guilty of conspiracy.

"The recording of physical attacks of violence against young people and the homeless have found their way to the Internet through video sharing sites that attract young teens," said Senator LaValle. "These videos are extremely disturbing and it is difficult to believe that anyone would view these as a form of entertainment.

"The people recording these videos are glorifying acts of violence at the risk of seriously injuring or possibly killing another person," continued Senator LaValle. "It is critical to the well-being of our society and the protection of our children that this practice is recognized for the harm it causes and is considered punishable under the law."
